On Sunday, Highland Park Baptist Church celebrated its 60th anniversary and extinguished a fire.
Duncan firefighters responded to a fire call around 8:50 a.m. Sunday. Deputy Fire Chief Dayton Burnside said the fire was contained to a small closet holding a water heater and a broom.
“A broom stuck in the hot water closet caught fire,” Burnside said. “They extinguished it.”
The firefighters arrived on the scene to ensure the fire was fully extinguished, he said. Burnside said people should be cautious when storing items near water heaters.
“That’s why we go around and check to make sure people don’t have combustible items by hot water tanks,” Burnside said.
