DUNCAN — Duncan firefighters responded to a vacant house structure fire near 14th and Hickory, two blocks north of Homeland Grocery, just before 5 a.m. Saturday. The home was a large brick home and firefighters had a difficult time breaking into the roof where it appeared the flames were heaviest.
About 30 minutes into the battle, a firefighter told the neighbors to the west, that they were concerned about a brick wall falling over toward their home. An elderly woman lives in the next door residence, but her family was with her. They quickly brought out some valuables, two dogs and then her walker. They also retrieved her medicine just to be on the safe side. They preferred their names not be mentioned in the article. Many people in the neighborhood used cell phones or Ipads to video tape the fire and action that brought them out of their homes.
During the fire, multiple times a firefighter's Personal Alert Safety System, or PASS, could be heard. Massive smoke billowed out of the house and blanketed the neighborhood over an area of several blocks to the west and north of the fire. Firefighters were still on the scene as of 6:15 a.m. An update will be posted later today.
