Lawton, OK — A few area residents have been cast to perform in “The Pirates of Penzance” which Cameron University Department of Music will produce. The Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera will feature current vocal music students in the department’s Opera Workshop.

From Stephens County, Kirk Prucha of Duncan and Alyson Hays of Marlow are among the cast.

Performances will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the McCutcheon Recital Hall. Admission is free; seating is limited to 80 patrons per performance. Seats can be reserved by calling 580-581-2440.

Gered High of Lawton plays Frederic; Alyssa Yates, Elgin, plays Mabel; and Alex Huff, Lawton, plays Major General Stanley. Other cast members are Christopher Beckett, Matthew Billings, Tara Gill, Chelsea Jenkins, Peter Macias and Stacia Martel, Lawton; Alyson Hays, Marlow; Spencer Jones, Oklahoma City; and Kirk Prucha, Duncan.

Jenkins is also a member of the production team, joining Jordan Brickhouse, Altus; Kirstie Bridges, Fletcher;  Kathryn Burns, Lawton; Justin Reff, Lawton; and Ben Slagle, Elgin. The production is directed by Dr. Kathy Scherler, Assistant Professor of Music. Yuika Chan-Spannagel will provide piano accompaniment.

In “The Pirates of Penzance,” Frederic was as a child apprenticed to a band of tenderhearted, orphaned pirates by his nurse who, being hard of hearing, had mistaken her master’s instructions to apprentice the boy to a pilot. Frederic, upon completing his 21st year, rejoices that he has fulfilled his indentures and is now free to return to respectable society. But it turns out that he was born on Feb. 29 in a Leap Year, and he remains apprenticed to the pirates until his actual 21st birthday.

“The Pirates of Penzance” is made possible by generous funding from the Southwest Oklahoma Opera Guild, which will host a reception following the Friday night performance.
