OKLAHOMA CITY — Take Shelter Oklahoma will host a telephone town hall discussion on Sunday, so Oklahoma residents (voters) can call in for a 30-minute town hall discussion of school storm shelters and the Take Shelter Oklahoma Initiative Petition. Callers should call 405-415-2080 to connect.

Presenters will explain the details of the ballot petition as well as the progress being achieved in the signature collection process. Participation in the “Get Your 20” campaign will be explained so supporters can help obtain the 160,000 signatures required. The panel will answer questions for voters across the state during the telephone town hall session.

Take Shelter Oklahoma filed the People’s Petition with the Secretary of State on Sept. 18 seeking to place a measure on the state ballot to fund school storm shelters. The organization must collect 160,000 signatures by mid-December in order to allow the citizens of the state of Oklahoma to decide on whether to fund storm shelters in Oklahoma schools. The signatures on the petition do not decide the issue; the petition simply puts the matter on the state ballot for the Oklahomans to decide.

The ballot measure would ask voters to approve the issuance of a $500 million state bond to fund the construction of school storm shelters and to provide for enhanced school security for public schools and career technology centers. The debt would be serviced by the revenue collected from the reinstated franchise tax. This funding mechanism would allow school districts the opportunity to build school storm shelters without raising any new or existing taxes and without cutting any current program spending in Oklahoma. The plan provides for 100 percent local control since the local school boards would make all decisions regarding the school storm shelters.
