DHS renovations stay on schedule, within budget

DUNCAN — All demolition work for phase one of the construction/renovation on Duncan High School has been completed.

This was one statement made by Rick Watts with CMS Willowbrook, the company who has been handling the project along with PBK Architect, during the regular meeting of the Duncan Board of Education Tuesday.

Construction on the  building addition is to begin next month. Several aspects regarding the esthetics of the addition were discussed by Ron Bailey with PBK Architect.

Both Bailey and Watts assured the board they are working hard to keep within the project budget.

“We’re getting everything you want, staying on budget and hope to even give you back some money,” said Watts.

In another presentation during the meeting, Alex Castro with Walmart explained how a parent of a DHS student came to the business for help with the Cover Our Kids project. This program attempts to provide each student with a helmet and blanket should they be caught in the school during a tornado.

Walmart, through its grant foundation, presented the school with $2,500 toward the project. These funds will help provide about 100 students or three classrooms with the essential protective gear.

Other agenda items included:

n Board members approved a petition by Abby Stewart to allow her to apply, on behalf of DHS, to become a chapter of the Best Buddies program. This program pairs students who have disabilities with those who don’t to help them feel more a part of the student body.

n It was approved by the board to purchase 29 iPads for Mark Twain Elementary, paid for by a grant from the McCasland Foundation.

n The resignations of Lori Brewer, cafeteria cashier/helper with 12 years of service, and Amy Worsham, DHS FACS teacher, was approved.

n Employment was approved for Stacey Longest, Duncan Middle School clerk; Jessica Zupper, Emerson teacher’s assistant; Toni Howard, Emerson teacher’s assistant/diabetic aide; John Moore, groundskeeper/general maintenance; Edwina Myers, Horace Mann cafeteria cashier/helper; and Sheryl McGhghy, DHS counselor.
