Sullivan awarded after 35 years of volunteering

DUNCAN — As a member of the Duncan Regional Hospital Auxiliary for 35 years, Volunteer Helen Sullivan has been there for every milestone at the hospital.

“Helen has volunteered with the hospital auxiliary for 35 years,” Director of Volunteer Services Betty Beck said. “She has been here from the beginning and we are blessed to have her.”

Sullivan joined the volunteer group during the auxiliary’s second meeting.

“It was something that I could do good for the city in which I lived in,”  she said. “At that time in my life, I was young. It sounded like fun to work in a gift shop.”

Sullivan said the first thing she did as a volunteer was sell donuts to the hospital offices, a tradition that is no longer alive at DRH. Except for that short period of time, Sullivan has worked in the gift shop for the entirety of her 35 years of service that she has been volunteering with the hospital.

“We had a cash drawer,” she said. “We had no computers or anything. It was fun. They increased the size of the gift shop as the hospital grew.”

Sullivan was awarded with one of 22  2012 Volunteer with Spirit awards given by the Oklahoma Hospital Association on Oct. 31 at the Oklahoma Hospital Convention Annual Convention.

“When they asked me if I would go, they told me they wanted to honor me,” Sullivan said.

Sullivan said she plans to continue volunteering as long as she can.

“If I get to where I cannot think or cannot walk or cannot do all those things, then I will have to quit,” she said. I do not know what the Lord has planned for me. He has left me here without my sweet husband all these years. I guess he had a reason. I know he did or I would not still be here.”

Should the date for The World's Largest Garage Sale be changed from the third weekend in July to sometime in October to take advantage of cooler weather like we had this past weekend?

No. It's better in the summer cause kids are out of school.
Yes. More shoppers would come during nice fall weather.
Either time is fine.
