VFW statue returns home

DUNCAN — After nearly a week of investigation, the Veterans of Foreign Wars soldier statue is back where it belongs.

On Monday morning, the soldier statue was reported missing to the Duncan Police Department. The statue is intended to be part of a memorial garden behind the VFW building. The memorial garden is a project of the VFW, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion and Honor Guard.

Saturday morning, the Duncan Police Department received a call from an area resident who found the statue in the South Industrial Park. Duncan Lieutenant of Investigation Det. Joe Shoemake a pick-up truck was used to take the statue back to the VFW.

“It had some damage, but nothing that can’t be fixed,” Shoemake said. “It look like it had been hauled on its back.”

He said the people who found the statue had read a story in The Duncan Banner, which gave that person knowledge of what the statue was and where it belonged. Shoemake said he’s glad to have the statue back where it belongs.
