On the record - City council members share their personal thoughts on $9 million road bond

DUNCAN — Here is how Mayor Gene Brown and the other members of the Duncan City Council view the $9 million bond proposal for street improvements and their opposition to borrowing money anyway should voters reject the bond on May 14:

Mayor Gene Brown

On the proposal: “The problem is not going to go away. The sooner we do it the better off we’re going to be as far as costs. It’s creating good streets in our community and the longer we wait the more it’s going to cost. We have to do something.”

On borrowing anyway if the bond is rejected: “What we would like to do is not add any more debt, to pay off the debts we already have. I think we have been doing a pretty good job of doing that.”

Councilman Tommy Edwards

On proposal: “Basically it’s the best we can do. Our roads are deteriorating and we have to do something to repair them. This is a Band-Aid and it will get us started. We are trying to spread it (repairs) out and do a little bit everywhere.”

On borrowing anyway: “I would not vote to borrow any more money. The last time we borrowed we borrowed as a utility authority and it’s not prudent now.”

Councilman Mike Nelson

On proposal: “Everyone knows what the needs are and this is the best thing to do. We looked at several different options. The city manager and the treasurer and financial coordinator put a lot of time on the different avenues and the general obligation bond is the best and most fair avenue.”

On borrowing anyway: “I wouldn’t vote to borrow the money like we did the last time. I wouldn’t put it on the credit card. That is not being financially responsible.”

Should the date for The World's Largest Garage Sale be changed from the third weekend in July to sometime in October to take advantage of cooler weather like we had this past weekend?

No. It's better in the summer cause kids are out of school.
Yes. More shoppers would come during nice fall weather.
Either time is fine.
