MARLOW — From a brand new gift to the 2012 Citizen of the Year, there were several highlights during the Marlow Chamber of Commerce Banquet.

The annual event, held Monday evening in the Marlow First Baptist Church Family LIFE Center, takes the time to recognize individuals and businesses in and around Marlow that contribute to and improve the city. This year’s Citizen of the year was Carolyn Lowe.

Lowe is described as a leader by example. Cricket Holland, who announced the winner, said Lowe never judges and is never critical as a leader. From the Angel Food program to Marlow Samaritans, Lowe is known as someone who watches out for others.

She is also called the “Food Guru” at Marlow Samaritans because of her constant online food searches for the best deals for the community food pantry.

“She puts God first, others second and self last and is devoted to the welfare of others,” Holland said.

Winner of the 2012 Community Improvement award was Jessica and Stephen Garvin, owners of Little Boy Blue. The corner of Broadway and Main was once Marlow’s original bank and is now a thriving boutique that is uniquely just for boys.

Months of sweat and tears went into renovating the space to keep its antique exterior, yet, give it the modern twist to make it stand out. When her name was called, Jessica shed a few more tears.

“When I heard them call the name, I just started crying,” she said.

The 2012 Free Enterprise winner was Frontier Feeds, owned by Neil and Valerie Moore. Jason McPherson, 2013 president of the Chamber and who announced the winners, said the store is something the community needs to check out.

“It has made a foundation for agriculture starting in 2009 with only three employees and now employs 20,” he said. “It is impressive for its agricultural diversification of products.”

One of the biggest spotlights of the evening was the presentation of a gift to the city from Marlow native Bob Willis, a renowned clay sculptor. Unveiled during the evening were clay busts dusted in bronze powder of the five Marlow Outlaws.

“Several areas in Marlow have been important in my life and my family’s lives,” Willis said. “I wanted to give these as a thank you to Marlow for being involved in my life growing up.”

Also unveiled at the banquet was the newly launched Marlow Chamber of Commerce website. Brad Boles, 2012 chamber president, began the improvement with last year’s officers and directors to make it more friendly for visitors to find businesses they may need. It is a project this year’s president, Jason McPherson hopes to utilize.

“Brad has started something very exciting and we want to capitalize on the website,” McPherson said. “I’m looking forward to this year.”
