Chamber to celebrate Duncan’s legacy at annual banquet

DUNCAN — Old scrapbooks discovered while cleaning out a backroom at the Duncan Chamber of Commerce and Industry provided inspiration for this year’s theme for the organization’s annual banquet

The scrapbooks, dating back to the 1940s, provided a glimpse into the past that today’s chamber members have never seen, said Sandy Stewart, the chamber’s director of investor services.

The look back provided enough inspiration for the chamber to decide it should be the them of this year’s annual banquet -- A Legacy of Leadership.

“We started reading these newspaper clippings and found out many of the important things that have happened in this city were through meetings that took place in the chamber,” said Stewart.

The banquet will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 6 at the Simmons Center.

“We’ll be celebrating Duncan’s legacy and looking toward a greater future.”

Former Lt. Governor Jari Askins will be this year’s master of ceremonies. The Duncan native is now associate provost for external relations at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.

Another Duncan native, David B. Hooten, will provide entertainment for the evening. Hooten is a multi-Grammy and Emmy nominated trumpeter and will perform along with Oklahoma guitarist Edgar Cruz.

“Both (Askins and Hooten) are pretty well loved in the area,” said Stewart.

The evening will also honor businesses and individuals who helped make 2013 an outstanding year for Duncan, she said.

Awards for Woman of the Year, Man of the Year, Community Improvement, Free Enterprise will be announced along with the Al Hinshaw Community Spirit Award.

“We will be taking nominations until Thursday,” Stewart said. “If anyone knows a man or woman they would like to nominate, we would love to have your nominations.”

Nomination forms can be found on the Chamber’s website at www.duncanchamber.org and returned to the chamber. Tickets are available by calling the Chamber at 580-255-3644.

“Tickets are going fast, so I encourage people to get theirs quickly,” said Stewart.

Full and  half table sponsorships cost $500 and $300, respectively while individual tickets are $40, she said.
