Ryan child drowns at Waurika Lake

DUNCAN — A toddler drowned Saturday at Waurika Lake in Jefferson County, after wandering from the campsite into the lake.

James Traywick Wyler, 3, of Ryan, was found in 10 to 18 inches of water about 100 yards from the tent in which he had been sleeping, at the Chisholm campgrounds site.

The drowning occurred about 12:30 a.m. Saturday, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol report filed by Trooper Jack Stranahan of the Lake Patrol Division.

Waurika Ambulance transported James to Jefferson County Hospital in Waurika where he was pronounced deceased.

Stranahan was assisted by Waurika Lake Park Manager Louis Holstead and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.

According to the report, next of kin was notified. No other details were available.
