DUNCAN — A proposed budget for the 2014 Career Expo was approved by the Red River Technology Center Board of Education during a regular meeting Monday.

RRTC hosts this event annually for eighth graders in the school’s coverage area. The 2014 Career Expo is scheduled for March 4.

Students are split into two groups. While one group visits the Simmons Center and are exposed to business and industry presentations on various careers, the other group tours RRTC and is shown what is taught there. After half a day, the groups switch places.

“(The budget) is close to what it was last year, I think we even saved a couple of dollars,” said Dennis Loafman, RRTC superintendent. “It’s a worthwhile event.”

Each year, RRTC’s carpentry students complete a housing project. Board members approved a plumbing quote of $4,750 from Dismuke Plumbing for the 2013-14 project.

“They’re to the point of plumbing, which is a good thing,” said Loafman. “This was the lowest bid and I believe it is the same as we had last year.”

With most of the business and industry courses RRTC offers, there is hands on education that goes along with it. To achieve this type of learning, contracts or statements of understanding must be approved by the board between the school and various related businesses.

During Monday’s meeting, the board approved statements of understanding of training for existing industries with Tilley Pressure Test, Wilkins Nursing Center, Duncan Regional Hospital and National Oilwell Varco.

Other agenda items included:

n Board members were taken through a review of the income and expenditure report for FY’13 and the proposed budget for FY’14. The FY’14 budget was then voted on for approval by the board.

n Kristal Thomas was approved to the A&CD, AEL and BIS instructor list.

n The board was informed of parent teacher conferences from 3-6 p.m. Oct. 24.

“We look forward to meeting parents and family of our students,” said Loafman.
