DUNCAN — They’ve done the practice laps, the first front strokes have been taken and Duncan Little Theatre’s “Dixie Swim Club”  began their journey Wednesday to Louisiana to compete in the American Association of Community Theatre’s Regional Festival.

The cast of leading ladies (Gina Flesher, Loisdawn Jones, Tana Ashford, Cindy Reynolds and Heather Amaya), stage manager Darrel Ashford, director Sharon Burum and a small fan club left for Lafayette, Wednesday morning. They along with Tulsa’s Heller Theatre will be representing Oklahoma in the competition.

As of dinner time Wednesday, Reynolds updated The Banner that the team had just left Shreveport. Reynolds was already at their destination as she left a few days earlier.

Today, they get in their one allotted rehearsal to get ready for the actual performance at 3:30 p.m. Friday.

However, they have had plenty of time beforehand to practice their quirky roles, including recently at the Duncan Regional Hospital Health Foundation Ladies’ Luncheon.

“We are so excited and the audience at the Ladies’ Luncheon gave us the burst of confidence we were needing,” said Tana Ashford. “We were very thankful they asked us to be the entertainment and to get that response and all the encouraging words afterward.”

Duncan’s community has helped the cast and crew pay for their trip by donation. By the time they left, almost all expenses had been covered, something that was greatly appreciated by them all.

“We can’t believe how Duncan has pulled together for their community theater,” said Ashford.

Sunday is the awards brunch where the group will find out if they get to take their production the next leg of the journey to the national festival in June in Carmel, Indiana. So, Saturday leaves an open day for them to do what they like.

“We’re going to watch some of the other plays to educate ourselves on what other theaters are doing,” Ashford said. “We hope to get to do some sightseeing and we’re going to eat all the Cajun food we can.”
