Duncan Gun Club is active area organization

DUNCAN On a rainy Sunday afternoon, a handful of Duncan Gun Club members gathered at their trap ranges to hold a meet shoot for trap, skeet and five-stand.

“It’s really just for fun, and we all enjoy shooting,” Mike Cook, President of the Duncan Gun Club, said.

Cook said the club is very active, and has over 40 members that participate and help with the many activities that the club holds, including their 4-H shooting league.

The 4-H league was started out of an Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA) state program that started in Duncan in 1979, and had only six kids in their first time around, and had over 50 this year.

“It’s a good way to introduce kids in the 4-H program to guns, show them how to use them, how to fire them and also gun safety,” Cook said. “These kids are the future of people using guns, so it’s important that we share this with our youth.”

The Duncan Gun Club holds several 4-H meets a year, including several district meets, and has had quite a bit of success, especially this year, including a junior team that took first and another member, Timothy Davidson, who took first in his age division at the state shoot in October.

The Gun club also offers many other events throughout the year, including district shoots and different types of meets. Cook said even when specific events aren’t happening at the gun range, chances are, someone is out there nearly every day doing something.

“We’re a very active gun club,” Cook said.

The reason behind Sunday’s meet shoot was to gear people up for hunting season according to Cook. He said that the club will hold one in November and one in December to help people get ready for the hunting seasons. They also hold three or four regular trap shoots throughout the year in cooperation with the ATA.

Cook said that shooting is a good family activity, and that people have come as far as Lawton to participate in their club.

“There was a military guy came out with his sons, because Lawton doesn’t have anything like this,” Cook said. “They came just to see what it was all about, and they’ll probably come back and become members.

“It’s a really good family activity.”

Cook also said that members are welcome to bring other people with them to the range and shoot, but they will have to pay an extra fifty cents per round of shooting, however, they can become members themselves if they want to. To get information on becoming a member of the Duncan Gun Club, go to Murfs Gun Shop in Duncan and ask about the club.

“We like to meet new people in the community and show them what we’re all about and show them a good time,” Cook said.
