Alumni inducted at DPS banquet

Burton, Scott among those recognized

DUNCAN — For the past 15 years, former Duncan students and Duncan High School alumni have been recognized for their successes. This tradition will continue Monday.

The Duncan Public Schools Foundation’s 16th annual Hall of Fame Banquet is set for 7 p.m. Monday in the Simmons Center. This year’s inductees are Ron D. Burton and Brook D. Scott.

Both Burton and Scott are graduates of Duncan High School.



Ron D. Burton

Burton was born in raised in Duncan. He attended school in the district from 1952 to 1964, leaving when he graduated.

He attended the University of Oklahoma and obtained his bachelor of business administration and his juris doctorate degrees.

Since graduating from OU, has been employed by the University of Oklahoma as an accountant from 1968 to 1970, and the University of Oklahoma Foundation as treasurer from 1970 to 1978 and as president from 1978 to 2007.

As an attorney, Burton is a member of the United States Supreme Court Bar, the American Bar Association, the Oklahoma Bar Association and the Cleveland County Bar Association. He has also been a member of the Real Property, Probate and Trust Section of the American Bar Association since 1983, and a member of the Taxation Section since 1979.

He is also involved in the Association of Fund Raising Professionals, the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, the National Committee on Planned Giving and the Association of University Real Estate Officers.

At OU, he has been a member of the board of directors for the OU Federal Credit Union for 15 years (one year as vice president and eight years as president). He was the president and treasurer of the OU Dad’s Association. He was also the president and director of the University Club.

He has also been involved in the Norman community. He was one of three founders of the Norman Public School Foundation and served on its board of directors for 15 years.

He also served on the committee that formed the Norman Community Foundation and was a member of that board for four years.

Burton has also been involved in the Sooner District of the Last Frontier Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

He was the district chairman for four years, and served as vice president and presidential adviser. He was the chairman of the District Membership Committee.

Aside from being involved, he has received numerous awards.

The Norman United Way/Junior League named him the 1990 Civic Volunteer of the Year.

He received the Service Above Self award from Rotary International, the Citation for Meritorious Service and the Distinguished Service Award from the Rotary Foundation and the International Service Award for a Polio-Free World.

The Boy Scouts of America recognized Burton with the District Award of Merit, the Council Extra-Miler Award, twice, and the Silver Beaver Award, which is the Boy Scouts’ highest honor.

He lives in Norman with his wife, Jetta, a Duncan native. Their daughter, Ronna, lives in Leesburg, Va., with her husband, Matt, son, Duncan, and daughter, Brynn. Burton’s son, Josh, and his wife, Tammie, live in Amarillo, Texas, and are expecting their first child.

Brook D. Scott

Although Scott was born in Lawton, he grew up in Duncan, where he attended Horace Mann Elementary School, Duncan Junior High and Duncan High School. He graduated in 1977.

He received his bachelor of science degree from Southwestern Oklahoma State University, his doctor of medicine degree from the University of Oklahoma and his Fellow of College of Cardiology from the University of Iowa.

Since graduating from OU, Scott has been employed by the OU as a physician, the University of Iowa as a scientist/physician and as a cardiologist for the Oklahoma Cardiovascular Association, where he has been employed since 1992.

With two colleagues, Scott went on to form the Oklahoma Foundation for Cardiovascular Research in 1995.

The non-profit organization performs clinical research with the goal of improving cardiovascular care in Oklahoma.

He was also a co-founder for the Oklahoma Heart Hospital in 2002.

The hospital is nationally recognized as the top cardiovascular institution and the largest provider of cardiovascular services in the state.

He has been on the board of directors since the hospital was founded.

Scott’s community service involvement includes accepting a commission as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve in 2006.

In April 2008, he deployed to Tikrit, Iraq, assigned to the 325th Combat Support Hospital in support of the Operation Iraqi Freedom.

He is on the board of trustees of Mercy Health Systems in Oklahoma.

His hobbies include cycling, running and mountain climbing.

He has competed in a marathon and has climbed some of the world’s tallest peaks.

In 2002, he carried the Olympic torch through Oklahoma City.

Scott lives in Edmond with his wife, Paula.

They have two daughters: Stephanie and Jennifer.
