VFW seeks veterans for parade

DUNCAN — Daniel Leal will never forget what veterans have done. After all, Leal is a veteran himself.

Leal, former commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1192, is in charge of planning this year’s Veterans Day parade for the VFW. The event is aimed at highlighting veterans who have served in war and those who are on active duty. The parade is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Nov. 8 in downtown Duncan.

Two years ago, the VFW didn’t have a parade to commemorate the national holiday. But last year, the parade became a big attraction to highlight the dedication of veterans.

“Unfortunately, a lot of people have forgotten what veterans have done for us,” Leal said.

While Americans may not remember or recognize what veterans have done to preserve freedom, veterans aren’t likely to forget. This is what has kept them involved in events like the parade every year.

However, many of the veteran groups, who were in the parade last year, have been deployed elsewhere. For instance, the National Guard Battery B, 1st Battalion, 158th Field Artillery was sent out in August.

“A lot of veterans won’t be available this year,” Leal said.

He said he wants the troops currently deployed to be recognized for what they’re doing, for their contribution to the country. This bit of recognition starts with veterans, he said.

One way to accomplish that is to have a large parade with various veteran groups coming together.

“We want every veteran to honor them,” Leal said.

This goal is even reflected in this year’s theme, “Veterans Honoring Veterans.” With many local veterans being deployed this year, he said having enough veterans coming out in support is important.

Still, the parade isn’t just for those currently serving the country. It’s for anyone who has given his or her time, loyalty and/or life to ensure freedom for all Americans.

Recognizing these men and women is the objective of Veterans Day.

“It’s important for all our veterans,” Leal said. “Our real heroes are the ones who didn’t make it.”
