3D Youth Coalition takes aim on drugs

DUNCAN —
Dream Duncan Destiny’s Drug-free Community chair, Dave Narducci, held a luncheon meeting at the Red River Technology Center Friday. The meeting focused on goals and aspirations to help turn around the drug abuse problems in Duncan.
Several of the goals outlined at the meeting included aiding the 3D Youth Coalition, what sort of rehabilitation efforts should be aided, prevention methods, the necessity for a homeless shelter, activity program to keep teens and kids busy as to not turn to drugs, among many others.
The 3D Youth Coalition encourages leadership among students by taking a stand against drugs, and developing them into community-focused adults.
Narducci proposed ideas for a community model, committee and action plan to help further these goals.
The floor was then opened to a brainstorming and discussion among the attendees.
“Drug court is a real, working system that is really a good thing,” said Dennis Hall, an attendee who handles jail ministry. “It punishes wrong, rewards right and handles things case-by-case.”
Other attendees spoke about their various involved organizations; from the Witchita Prevention Network’s mentoring to local youth ministry efforts.
“We all have skeletons in our closet here,” said Gina Flesher, attendee and active community member. “If we’re serious about fighting drugs, we must be open to all ways.”
Other members spoke about Recovery Oklahoma, an outpatient treatment program for youth and adults who struggle with drug addiction, and how Duncan requires a larger emphasis on psychological care.
“A lot of drug abuse is only a symptom of a deeper problem,” said Narducci.
Many of the attendees agreed; Flesher also noted the necessity for more psychological treatment and care for youth.
Before adjourning, Narducci mentioned how he wished to get the community involved and galvanized, and how “we don’t want the coalition to become about the committee.”
The Drug Free Community coalition will continue to meet every last Friday of the month, every month, at noon at the Red River Technology center.
