Two women arrested Wednesday morning

DUNCAN — A Comanche and Duncan woman were charged in Stephens County District Court Thursday afternoon for possession of drugs.

Miranda Jo Broom, 20, and Candice Nicole Barnes-Padilla, 23, were arrested shortly after 3:30 a.m. Wednesday after police pulled their vehicle over for allegedly failing to stop at a stop sign at the 10th and Bois D’Arc intersection.

Barnes-Padilla was charged with one count of trafficking in illegal drugs and two counts of possession of a controlled substance.

Broom was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance.

Bond was set at $15,000 Thursday afternoon for Barnes-Padilla and $4,500 for Broom. Their next appearance in court is scheduled for July 7.

If convicted on all charges, Barnes-Padilla could face up to life in prison and up to a $100,000 fine.

Barnes-Padilla is alleged to have possessed ecstasy, marijuana and over five grams of crack cocaine.

According to the affidavit prepared by Duncan Police Master Officer Jason Egger, Egger’s K-9, Chino, showed a positive alert for the odor of narcotics within the vehicle.

Because Barnes-Padilla and Broom were both female, Egger requested Duncan Police Officer Holly Atkinson to assist in searching the females.

According to the affidavit, Atkinson found some of the narcotics in her search. Both Barnes-Padilla and Broom were arrested and taken to jail. A more thorough search was performed after they arrived, when more narcotics were found on Barnes-Padilla.
