VELMA — Nineteen young women will vie for the title of Miss Velma-Alma 2008 at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the V-A High School auditorium.
Miss V-A 2007 Shelby Hays and Dillon Allred will be emcees for the event. Sandy Pogue is pageant director.
The competition will actually begin Friday afternoon, when the hopefuls participate in personal interviews with the judges. During the evening performance, the contestants will model both casual and evening wear.
Five senior boys chosen by the V-A student body will serve as escorts for the contestants. They are John Darter, Ethan Dulworth, Clay Dumos, Ryan Miller and Kyle Tilley.
Miss V-A 2008 will be crowned at the end of the evening, and four runners-up will also be named. All five will receive scholarships. Miss Congeniality and Miss Photogenic will also be chosen, along with Mr. V-A.
Participating this year are
• Rindi Lynn Alexander, 18-year-old daughter of Rob and Audra Alexander and Wendi and John Long. She is a senior at V-A, and is active in basketball, softball, cheerleading and show band. She is a member of Beta Club, National Honor Society and Comet Reading. Rindi plans to attend the University of Central Oklahoma and major in hotel management.
• McKenzie Cogswell, daughter of Nicky and Nancy Carroll. She is also a senior. She is active in softball, basketball, National Honor Society, Beta Club, FFA and cheerleading. Her honors include Superintendent’s Honor Roll, citizenship award, Student of the Month, DAR Good Citizen Award, All-Star cheerleader, softball All-Star, and Outstanding Female Sportsmanship Award. She was also voted most likely to succeed and Best All-Around of her class. Kenzie plans to attend Oklahoma State University and major in natural resource ecology.
• Megan McEwan, 17-year-old daughter of William McEwan. She is a senior. She is active in cheerleading and track. She is a member of Beta Club, National Honor Society, Comet Reading and the All-American Scholar program. She plans to attend Midwestern State University and major in dental hygiene.
• Rebecca Moore, 17-year-old daughter of Tena Moore and granddaughter of Ronny and Alice Moore. She is a senior. She participates in cheerleading, school newspaper staff, Comet Reading, academic team, and is class secretary. She is a member of Beta Club and National Honor Society. She plans to attend the University of Central Oklahoma.
• Hayeli D’Cole Southerland, 18-year-old daughter of Ted Southerland and Allen and Gina Mercer. She is a senior. She is involved in softball, cheerleading and yearbook. She is a member of the Comet Reading program and Beta Club. Hayeli plans to attend the University of Central Oklahoma and major in nursing.
• Leslie Winslow, daughter of Donny and Carla Winslow. A senior, she is a cheerleader and an active member of National Honor Society and Beta Club.
• Saniya Atanova, 16-year-old daughter of Rzagali and Alma Atanova of Khazakstan and host family Jerry and Mattie Hunt. She is a junior. She is involved in band, show band, Beta Club and National Honor Society. Saniya plans to attend Boston College to become a lawyer.
• Danica Brown, 17-year-old daughter of Rick and Lisa Brown. She is a junior. She is active in Student Council, where she is local treasurer and District 3 president. She is a member of the academic team, Beta Club, National Honor Society, Comet Reading program and the tutoring program. She is listed on the Superintendent’s Honor Roll. Danica plans to attend Oklahoma State University.
• Shelby Cheyenne Brown, 17-year-old daughter of Jeff and Kelly Brown. She is active in softball and cheerleading. She is a member of National Honor Society, Beta Club and Comet Reading. Shelby plans to attend college and major in the medical field.
• Whitney Condit, 17-year-old daughter of Norman and Vickie Condit, and Sharon Condit. She is a junior. She is active in softball, basketball and Beta Club. She is also a member of the National Honor Society. Whitney pland to attend University of Central Oklahoma and major in forensic science.
• Laura Olivia Gilby, 17-year-old daughter of Kelly and Julie Gilby. She is a junior. She is active in cross country, track and cheerleading. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Beta Club. Laura plans to attend the University of Oklahoma and major in biology, and later go into pediatrics.
• Jessica Hoffman, 17-year-old daughter of Knut and Martina Hoffman of Germany, and Kent and Sandy Pogue. She is a junior. She is active in cross country, basketball and track. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Beta Club. Jessica plans to finish school in Germany, then go to college to study hotel management.
• Emily McNeill, the 17-year-old daughter of Robert and Diane McNeill. She is a junior. She is involved in basketball, Beta Club, National Honor Society, Student Council, and is the chief editor of the high school newspaper. Emily plans to attend college and become a registered nurse.
• Kyla Sutton, daughter of Eddie and Charla Sutton. She is a member of Beta Club, Comet Reading program, and participates in softball and cheerleading. Kyla plans to play softball in college while she obtains a degree in advertising.
• Deena Wilson, 17-year-old daughter of Brenda Wilson and Jackie Davis. She is a junior. She is involved in Beta Club, Comet Express Newspaper where she serves as clubs editor, academic team, JOM, National Honor Society, and Comet Reading program. Deena plans to attend Oklahoma State University and major in zoology or marine biology.
• Alexandra Bare, sophomore daughter of Kenny and Julie Bare. Her activities include color guard captain 2006-08, academic team member, Beta Club, HOBY Ambassador, interscholastic meet participant, Lions Club Student of the Month, National Honor Society, Oklahoma Honor Society, Relay For Life, Student Council representative, and Superintendent’s Honor Roll.
• Katherine “Katie” Bryant, daughter of Danny and Gayla Bryant. She is a sophomore. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Beta Club. She is sophomore class vice president and the assistant layout editor of the Comet Express newspaper. She is a very active member of Velma Baptist youth group. Katie plans to attend Oklahoma State University and major in physical therapy, specializing in pediatrics.
• Kaylee Sanner, 16-year-old daughter of Larry and Cindy Sanner. She is a sophomore. She participates in softball, basketball, track and cheerleading. She is a member of Beta Club and the Comet Reading program. Kaylee plans to attend college and major in a medical field.
• Mary Smith, daughter of Marty Smith. She is active in Velma-Alma band, academic team, Beta Club, National Honor Society and Velma’s color guard squad. Her hobbies include reading, drawing, playing on the computer and playing video games. Mary plans to attend Oklahoma State University and major in education.
The pageant is open to the community. Tickets will be available at the door.
