DUNCAN Mon, May 12 2008

Many Duncan churches are celebrating the Easter season with special services and activities in addition to their regular Sunday schedule.
One of the milestone events will be the much-anticipated first public worship service in the former J.C. Penney building. Acquired last year by First Christian Church and dubbed its “South Campus,” the renovations are not quite complete, but “Sunrise on Main” will be held at 7 a.m. Sunday with a theme of “A Service of Light and Fire, of Water and the Word.” A time of refreshments and fellowship will follow the service, which is open to the community, as are all of the services listed here.
Several Good Friday services, including the annual communitywide service at West Side Christian Church, have already taken place today, but several more are planned, with a couple of churches holding services on Saturday.
• Western Heights Baptist Church, 2305 W. Beech, will hold a Good Friday service at 7 p.m. today. The Rev. Wesley Faulk, pastor, will give a special message on “The Death of Jesus” from Luke 22, 23.
• All Saints’ Episcopal Church, 809 W. Cedar, will observe The Stations of the Cross at 5:30 p.m. today. Good Friday Liturgy will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the nave.
Holy Saturday service will be held at 9:45 a.m., and The Great Vigil of Easter will begin at 8:30 p.m., followed by Parish Celebration in the parish hall.
• Though not specifically a Good Friday service, Miracle Revival Center, 2865 S. 13th, will continue its first spring camp meeting at 7 p.m. today with music and ministry.
There will be a service at 4 p.m. Saturday with an evening meal at 5:30 p.m. and evening service at 7 p.m.
Call 580-470-5609 for meal reservations.
Sunrise services are planned by several local congregations.
• Chisholm Trail Cowboy Church of Southern Oklahoma will have a sunrise service at 7:15 a.m. Sunday in the Claud Gill Arena, followed by the regular service at 10 a.m. In case of rain, the services will be held in the fairgrounds building.
• West Side Christian, 1801 W. Beech, will begin its Resurrection celebration at 6:30 a.m. Sunday with a sunrise service. Following a short video presentation, Dr. Jerry Black will sing “Then Came the Morning.” He has chosen to use that same title for his meditation.
After the Easter dawn service, the congregation will assemble in the Harp Fellowship Hall for a continental breakfast.
• Western Heights Baptist Church will hold a sunrise service at 7:30 a.m. The pastor will share a message from Luke 24:1-12, “Marveling at the Risen Son.” There will be special music at the service. The service will be followed by a fellowship breakfast of bagels, doughnuts, snacks and Dinosaur Eggs.
• Parkview Baptist Church, 902 N. 19th, will have a sunrise service followed by a breakfast. At 9:30 a.m., the children will have an egg hunt.
• First Presbyterian Church, 704 W. Ash, will hold a sunrise service at 7 a.m. After Sunday school, the traditional hot cross bun fellowship will begin at 10 a.m.
