  • SCHD recognizes achievements of nurses
The work of America’s 2.9 million registered nurses to save lives and to maintain the health of millions of individuals is the focus of this year’s National Nurses Week, celebrated annually May 6-12. The American Nurses Association has selected “Nurses: Making a Difference Every Day” as the theme for 2008.

  • DAD celebrates
Dance Academy of Duncan (DAD) is in its eighth year of carrying out a common vision of keeping classical dance in Stephens County.
The organization will hold a free recital at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Simmons Center Theater.

  • Owls flock to tea
Owls took over the Prairie House last week, and a good time was had by all.
Members of GFWC Owl Study Club observed April 24 — the 118th anniversary of the formal beginning of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs — with a tea at the restored historic home. The occasion marked the club’s first official meeting at the Prairie House, even though the local GFWC groups had contributed to the restoration project, and members and their guests were treated to tours of the house.
Many of the Owl Study Club members brought out vintage hats and gloves for the occasion, as women who visited the home in the era in which the Foreman family occupied it might have worn. Although earlier visitors might have experienced a more formal atmosphere, the Owl gathering was a less serious, more entertaining event.

  • Heartbeat showcases ‘Dance Like a Rock Star’
Heartbeat Dance Studio will present its 24th annual spring showcase for dance, “Dance Like a Rock Star,” at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. May 4 in the Simmons Center Theatre.
This year’s production will incorporate jazz, tap, ballet, point, lyrical and hip-hop numbers set to rock music.

  • Looking to third year
    Film Festival keeps rolling.

  • Artistic ‘Llama Lady’
Some of Susan Elliott’s friends call her “Llama Lady,” and she takes it as a compliment. She does love llamas, and has a small herd of them at her rural home, but there are many other facets to the Duncan artist, too.

  • Artists named to elite group
Three Duncan artists have been named to an elite group chosen to participate in the Red River Valley International Juried Art Exhibition at the Red River Valley Museum in Vernon, Texas.

  • Swap meet
Autos the talk at second swap meet.

  • Duncan home featured
Duncan residents who drive in the area of 11th and Beech are familiar with the large house on the northwest corner of the intersection that is surrounded by a yard filled with plants, statuary and lacy white wrought iron.
