Comanche knocks out Waurika

WAURIKA — From the tone of head coach Channa Byerly voice, one might think her Comanche basketball team was the one that lost the game by double digits.

It didn’t, and in fact Comanche beat the Lady Eagles of Waurika 59-46 Friday night, but the rhythm and pace of the game just didn’t sit well with its coach.

“I’m just dissapointed in the way we blayed,” Byerly said. “The only good thing about that game is that we won, but that’s it.”

Comanche shot 23-of-69 (35%) from the field, but nearly matched Waurika in turnovers, committing just one fewer with a total of 19 in the game.

Cassie Sanders led the way for the Lady Indians, scoring 18 points off 9-for-27 shooting. Nicole Martin added 11 points as she shot 4-of-12 on the night, connecting on three of her eight free throw attempts.

Comanche led 29-14 at halftime and had the chance to put away the Lady Eagles but became their own worst enemy, forcing shots and breaking down on defense once the third quarter began.

Comanche also had trouble containing Lady Eagles senior Brittany Elkins who finished the game with 30 points to lead all scorers, making five mid-range jump shots in a row late in the third and early fourth quarter. Elkins finished the game 13-for-27 from the field.

Elkins and helped pull Waurika within 45-42 with 4:46 left in the fourth quarter after a 12-4 run, but couldn’t match the shooting of Comanche as they began to pull away with some solid defensive posessions. The spurt on offense, however, pleased head coach Roger Jessie.

“We were able to get it close there at the end,” Jessie said. “I’m real happy at the way we continued to battle, but they just had a few killer shots to pull away in the last few minutes.”
