Velma-Alma sweeps, Walters and Empire girls roll

VELMA-ALMA — The Velma-Alma basketball teams had character building exercises Friday night. After getting swept in the season opener by Healdton, the Comet teams each picked up wins over Rush Springs in close contests.

The games against Rush Springs was the second in as many days for Central High who held its homecoming Friday night.

Walters doubled up Big Pasture, as Cassadie Holybee netted 24 points.

Empire’s girls managed to keep the Grandfield ladies to just eight points while pouring in 48 to coast to an easy win. The Lady Bearcats are now 1-1 on the season as Dakota Brown put in 14 points for the Lady Bulldogs.

VELMA — The inexperienced Comet basketball team was given some excellent on the job training as it picked up a 50-44 win over Rush Springs in overtime. Dillon Dennis hit a 3-pointer to break a tie in the extra session and the team went on to hit 5-of-8 from the free throw line to pick up the win and even its record at 1-1 on the season.

“We’re learning as we go,” Velma-Alma head coach Kenny Bare said. “The kids played really hard and I think we will see steady improvement as the season goes along.”

The Comets took a 21-15 lead into the half only to see the Redskins go off from beyond the arc in the second half. James McWilliams hit five 3-pointers in the half and led all scorers with 24 points.

Kale Gayanich led the Comets with 16 points and Dennis added 11. Dillon Morgan and Trenten Files each added eight.

Velma-Alma will return to action on Tuesday when it hosts Empire.

Should the date for The World's Largest Garage Sale be changed from the third weekend in July to sometime in October to take advantage of cooler weather like we had this past weekend?

No. It's better in the summer cause kids are out of school.
Yes. More shoppers would come during nice fall weather.
Either time is fine.
