Star Spencer doubles up Lady Demons, 60-30

CACHE — Speed is hard to simulate in practice, especially if it is the kind of speed that Star Spencer boasts.

In the first night of play in the Cache Festival, the Duncan Lady Demons wound up in a track meet they could not win as they fell to the Lady Bobcats 60-30. Duncan was tied with Star Spencer 11-11 in the first quarter only to be outscored 19-1 in the remainder of the half.

“They played at another speed than we did,” Duncan head coach Karen Berninger said. “You don’t make that kind of transition in a quarter or a half. We’re going to be a better team because of this. What concerns us is a lot of times, confidence is taken away with losses but we’re not going to let that happen to us.”

Entering the game with a 1-0 record after a win at Northwest Classen, the Lady Demons appeared to have plenty of confidence. Kenzie Kennedy, seeing her first action of the year, hit a basket and Rachelle Carr tacked on a 3-pointer to give Duncan a quick 5-0 lead.

Star Spencer, playing tight defense in the half-court, stormed back to take a 9-5 lead. McKenzie ended the run with a basket and the teams went back and forth tying the game at 11 before the Lady Bobcats asserted themselves. Star Spencer dominated the boards and forced its fair share to turnovers to kick its transition game into high gear, getting several easy buckets to take a 15-11 lead after one and extend a run into the second quarter.

“I think we did a good job of blocking out but we weren’t able to get some calls over the back,” Berninger said. “The officials called a more physical game.”

Carr scored a quick basket in the third quarter to end a drought of over eight minutes without a basket but Duncan was unable to stifle the Star Spencer offense. The Lady Bobcats had an answer for everything the Lady Demons tried, hitting the outside shot when Duncan packed it in.

Star Spencer hit 8-of-13 from the field in the third quarter to extend its lead to 48-21 and was never seriously challenged as it dropped Duncan to 1-1 on the season.

Carr scored 13 points to lead Duncan in scoring. McKenzie, Kara Watkins and Aliesha Milton each added four points.

Should the date for The World's Largest Garage Sale be changed from the third weekend in July to sometime in October to take advantage of cooler weather like we had this past weekend?

No. It's better in the summer cause kids are out of school.
Yes. More shoppers would come during nice fall weather.
Either time is fine.
