Lady Outlaws hook Longhorns

Newberry, Leippe lead Marlow

MARLOW — MARLOW — It may not have been pretty, but as they say, a win is a win.

Once the Marlow Lady Outlaws found their rhythm and shook away the first-game jitters, they were able to cruise to an opening season win Tuesday night, knocking off the Lady Longhorns of Lone Grove 47-36.

Skylar Newberry led all scorers with 18 points on 6-of-18 shooting from the field and hitting 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. Junior Taylor Leippe added 17 for Marlow, shooting 3-of-6 from behind the arc.

Head coach Kirk Harris said he was pleased with the way his team came around once it settled its first quarter nerves.

“Initially I thought we came out a little cold, settling for the three-point shot too often,” Harris said. “I know we came out a little slow but we picked it up once we got after it defensively.”

Down 11-7 after the first quarter, the Lady Outlaws outscored Lone Grove 18-4 in the second period, eliminating several turnovers that plagued their offense in the opening minutes. Marlow finished the game with 16 turnovers while Lone Grove committed 27.

“In the second quarter, we had more transition stuff,” Harris said. “We’re a lot better when we can get some easy baskets in transition. It seems like we shoot better when we make a few baskets and get our confidence up a little bit.”

Leading the way for Lone Grove was Caly Mae Hunter with 11 points, as the Lady Longhorns shot 14-of-43 as a team from the field. Marlow shot 16-of-54 for the game, making 9-of-18 free throws.

“We were able to keep them from making a run after half time,” Harris said. “I thought if we could step on them so they couldn’t, we’d be all right. We tried to force some things that weren’t there in the first part of the game but we did good at holding the ball and running up and scoring later.”

Should the date for The World's Largest Garage Sale be changed from the third weekend in July to sometime in October to take advantage of cooler weather like we had this past weekend?

No. It's better in the summer cause kids are out of school.
Yes. More shoppers would come during nice fall weather.
Either time is fine.
