Duncan trio prepares to hit links at All-State

Totty, Gregston ready to play together one last time

Three Duncan High golfers will be making the rounds Monday at Lincoln West Golf Course in Oklahoma City.

Tom Shaw, Jillian Gregston and Morgan Totty all were named All-State after the state tournament in May.

Shaw said that being named to the All-State squad was something he worked toward this past season.

“Coach (Ed) Cox has a list of all the All-State golfers from Duncan, and I wanted my name to be up there on that list,” Shaw said. “It was a goal of mine all season. I feel very honored to play in the All-State tournament.”

Shaw’s goal for the event is simple – play well.

“I just want to go up and shoot a low score,” he said, “and have fun.”

That shouldn’t be too hard since Shaw has played the course before.

“It is a course where you can shoot a low score,” Shaw said. “It is a course I feel comfortable on. I’ve played quite a few times before and done well on. There really aren’t any obstacles.”

Totty, who has signed to join the golf team at Southern Nazarene University, also said that it was an honor to play in the All-State event, but is looking forward to playing with Gregston once more.

“It is my final time to play with Jill,” she said. “We’ve played together since we were little kids and this will be the last time.”

Getting on the All-State team took a lot of work, and Totty credited her practice regimen for making the All-State squad.

“My practice routine has gotten better, so I’ve gotten better,” she said.

Making All-State was not Totty’s first goal, but it was part of achieving her ultimate goal.

“The state championship was a goal since my freshman year,” Totty said. “We didn’t get it the last two years, but we did it this year.”

Gregston is excited to playing with her peers once more.

“I’m excited to be playing with people my age,” She said. “I’m proud that Morgan got it too.”

Gregston, who will golf at the University of Oklahoma, said that the tournament will mark the end of one era and hopefully mark the beginning of a new one.

“Basically, it is closing one chapter in my life, but I’m opening a new one.”
