Swimming season begins today!

Fuqua Pool opens at 1 p.m.

DUNCAN — The swimming season begins at 1 p.m. today in Duncan with the opening of Fuqua Pool, one of the largest  municipal pools in Oklahoma.

Admission is  50-cents for visitors 17 and under and  $1 for everyone else.

Duncan Parks Superintendent Dana Stanley said the pool hours will be from 1-7 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Swimmers under 8 years old must be accompanied by someone at least 14, Stanley said.

Proper swimwear is required and no food or drinks may be brought inside the pool area, he said.

The city splash pad at Avenue D and Chestnut  already is open,   Stanley said.

The venerable pool has been a staple of the summer season in Duncan since it was built in  1938 by the Works Progress Administration, a government agency created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to put Americans to work during the depths of the Depression.

Stanley said it is one of the largest city-owned swimming pools in Oklahoma.

The City of Miami in northeast Oklahoma claims to have the largest public pool in the state.

Should the date for The World's Largest Garage Sale be changed from the third weekend in July to sometime in October to take advantage of cooler weather like we had this past weekend?

No. It's better in the summer cause kids are out of school.
Yes. More shoppers would come during nice fall weather.
Either time is fine.
