Cruising down memory lane

Main Street Duncan sponsors monthly car cruise

DUNCAN — Charles Harris traveled down memory lane Friday as a spectator at the second monthly Main Street Car Cruise.

Harris brought several family members and while he didn’t do any cruising, he did watch and reminiscence.

Harris found a bench in front of one of the Main Street businesses and watched the cruise. His younger brother, Paul Harris, and Paul’s daughter Jamie Harris each drove a vehicle in the event.

“I used to cruise these streets in the late ’50s,” Charles said. “We’d always go too fast. It brings back a few good memories.”

Harris said he and the family were also going to enjoy the tailgate party.

After the success of the first Main Street Duncan Car Cruise last month, expectations were high for the second event.

July’s car cruise night had 127 registered vehicles cruising Main Street Duncan, and Tammy Johnson, director, anticipated another well-attended night.

“I’m anxious to see what happens tonight,” she said within the first hour of the cruise. “They don’t really come out until around after eight when it has cooled down.”

Once people have gotten home from work, Johnson said they get themselves and their cars ready for the evening. Additionally, the older cars easily get overheated and need the cooler weather to run well.

Response from the first cruise was overwhelmingly positive, Johnson said. Many of the participants were of the generation who “dragged Main” when they were younger.

“They loved it,” she said. “They get to relive what they did in the past.”

Should the date for The World's Largest Garage Sale be changed from the third weekend in July to sometime in October to take advantage of cooler weather like we had this past weekend?

No. It's better in the summer cause kids are out of school.
Yes. More shoppers would come during nice fall weather.
Either time is fine.
