Plato first-graders give thanks

DUNCAN — Plato Elementary first-graders have much to be thankful for.

To ask a student a random what he or she is thankful for, that student might say he or she is thankful for family, friends or the Thanksgiving lesson learned Thursday. Plato first-graders invited family members to eat lunch with them, and during that Thanksgiving-themed program, the two students performed two songs and a poem for their audience.

This year’s program was extra special for at least one Plato teacher and two retired Plato teachers. For first-grade teacher Chrisie Young, this was her second year to lead the program with the other first-grade teacher Jamie Rowell. Young’s son, Cole Young, is also a Plato first-grader this year and was able to participate in the program.

Cole Young invited all his grandparents to the event, and he said one of his favorite parts was getting to eat Thanksgiving food.

Chrisie Young said the event did have good participation for parents and grandparents, all of whom showed up to support their first-graders.

“It’s a very good turnout,” Young said. “There’s a lot of involved, caring parents and grandparents. They love when their parents come.”

A lot of those parents were involved in setting up Wednesday for the lunchtime program. Parents also brought desserts, including cookies and cupcakes, for the students to enjoy.

This year also marked the first time Linda Craig and Vicki Vermadahl have been involved in the program since they retired as Plato first-grade teachers four years ago.

Vermadahl was invited by a first-grader. Craig is preparing to be a long-term substitute for Rowell and is familiarizing herself with Rowell’s way of teaching.

Craig admitted to missing teaching first-grade at the elementary school, but is looking forward to returning to her old stomping grounds.

In addition to eating lunch with family and singing, the students spent time learning about Thanksgiving in class. They also made turkey placemats that listed things they are thankful for and made pilgrim puppets out of paper bags.

First-grader Jackson Bull said he enjoyed making these items to show his family, and he was excited to sing for his dad. First-graders Ava Johnson and Ava Miller said Thanksgiving is a fun celebration they can share with their families.

“I love it,” Miller said.

    "LOOK OUT!!"

Opponents of marijuana legalization are rapidly losing the battle for hearts and minds. Simply put, the public understands that however you measure the consequences of marijuana use, the drug is significantly less harmful to users and society than tobacco or alcohol.

Should the date for The World's Largest Garage Sale be changed from the third weekend in July to sometime in October to take advantage of cooler weather like we had this past weekend?

No. It's better in the summer cause kids are out of school.
Yes. More shoppers would come during nice fall weather.
Either time is fine.
