FUMC men serve up flapjack feast

DUNCAN — The men’s group at First United Methodist Church set out to make pancake perfection, while feeding the community.

Group members worked with other members of the church Tuesday to host the annual Pancake Day, formerly sponsored by the Duncan Chisholm Trail Kiwanis Club. This is the second year for the FUMC Men’s Group to sponsor the pancake feast.

“It’s a tradition thing we’re trying to carry on,” Butch Whitten, member of the men’s group, said. “It’s state election day. We’ll do this whether you vote or not.”

When Kiwanis sponsored the event, the Pancake Day took place on Election Day, regardless of whether people voted or what the weather might be doing. This year, there wasn’t anything for people to vote on, aside from whether they wanted bacon, sausage or both.

The weather also was colder and rainy than the days leading up to the event. Whitten said the weather might have kept some people away, but he thought the promise of warm food also drew people.

“The crowd seems real steady,” Whitten said. “To me, it’s a good weather day for hotcakes.”

Hotcakes, pancakes or flapjacks —regardless of what individuals might call them — the church had plenty to go around. The church had 750 pounds of pancake mix to prepare prior to the event.

The pancakes were served with sausage and/or bacon (Blue Gold and sold by the Duncan FFA), and could be dressed up with butter and syrup. Orange juice, water and coffee were also served to Pancake Day patrons.

Pancake Day raises money for various community ministries, from Sole Sunday (where the church helps purchase shoes for Duncan children), Gabriel’s House, two community meals at The Well and Backpack for Kids.

Whitten said taking over the Pancake Day sponsorship became easier for the church in the past few years because of the addition of a community gathering room and the expansion of the church kitchen. He said it would have been difficult to feed that many people at the church previously.

But the church has held various events and fundraisers in its gathering hall. The women of First United Methodist host a chicken noodle dinner every year, Whitten said, although that event also contains numerous pickup orders and fewer people dining in.

Although the church men help with that event, Whitten said the Pancake Day is something the men can take lead on.

“It’s something to augment that in a way,” he said.

Should the date for The World's Largest Garage Sale be changed from the third weekend in July to sometime in October to take advantage of cooler weather like we had this past weekend?

No. It's better in the summer cause kids are out of school.
Yes. More shoppers would come during nice fall weather.
Either time is fine.
