Bringing characters to life through sculpture

DUNCAN — Danielle Francis said one of her favorite cartoon shows is “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”

After attending this week’s Sculpture: The Original 3D summer camp at Chisholm Trail Heritage Center, she won’t have to wait until Saturday mornings to see one of her favorite characters.

“I had always wanted to make a Mikey someday,” said Francis, referring to Michelangelo, the turtle clothed in orange. “He’s the funny one.”

Her sculpture depicts Mikey holding a box of the turtles’ favorite food: pizza.

During the first two days of class, instructed by Andy Couch, students focused on their clay sculptures. Some made pots, while others like Francis made figurines. In the first hour of class on Wednesday, Rowan Franklin worked to finish his cowboy clay figure.

“The hardest part about (the clay sculpture) is figuring out if what you’re adding to it is too bulky and getting all the details right, like the clothing texture,” he said.

Wednesday, the class began to work on stand-up posters of some of their favorite cartoon characters such as Tweety Bird and Sponge Bob. On pieces of cardboard, they drew the likeness of their chosen character then cut it out.

After applying a stand to the back, they had a large poster.

“It’s been a good week and we’ve had people from surrounding areas come,” said Couch. “We’re also going to work this week with aluminum foil and bailing wire.”
