Duncan approves hours for upcoming school year

DUNCAN — For several years, Oklahoma school districts have had the option for setting school years to include at least 180 days or 1,080 hours.

On Tuesday, the Duncan Board of Education chose to retain the 1,080 hour schedule for the 2013-14 school year for Duncan Public Schools. This has been a practice since 2009.

“It allows us more flexibility, like with inclement weather” District Superintendent Sherry Labyer said.

In the past, the 1,080 hour schedule for instruction has helped keep Stephens County school districts from having to extend the end of the school year. If a school district missed some days, based on the 180 day schedule, its students could find themselves making up days.

Many of the school districts have more than 1,080 hours slated for each school year.

In other action:

n A sublease was renewed with the Stephens County Educational Facilities Authority for the additions and renovations to DHS. The original agreement was entered into by the Board of Stephens County Commissioners, which makes up the authority, during the June 5, 2012, meeting of the commissioners.

The commissioners created the authority in April 2012, following the passing of bond issues for Duncan, Central High and Marlow school districts. Duncan has to renew the sublease every year until the bonds are paid off.

n Approved two items with the City of Duncan. The first was approval of the agreement for a human resources officer in the amount of $36,624.67. Last year’s total was $34,880.64. Officer Michael Breeze has been the resource officer since 2009, following the retirement of Randall “Officer Mac” McAllister.

The second item was an agreement for security contract to have Duncan police officers at school activities and home athletic events in the amount of $17,679.77. This was an increase from last year’s total of $16,837.25.

Labyer said the increase in both agreements account for salary increases for the police officers.

n The board also approved a blanket amount of $4,00,000 to cover the yearly payroll encumbrances for support and certified employees who are issued payrolls in the month of July.
