Terry family gets clever with ‘Stuff the Bus’

The Mike Terry Auto Family Chevrolet dealership parking lot is full of vehicles, but there is one that may have stood out more than others this last week: A big, bright yellow school bus.
The bus isn’t for sale and does belong to Duncan Public Schools. It’s main purpose is to drive attention to the dealership’s “Stuff the Bus” community project.
“We like doing anything with the local schools and to support teachers,” said Julie Terry. “They don’t get paid enough and we know they have to buy a lot of their supplies out of their own pockets.”
In an effort to ease the strain on the wallets of Duncan school teachers, the Terrys came up with “Stuff the Bus.” The project urges the community to purchase and donate school supplies that will literally “stuff the bus.”
Anything on a child’s school supply list will be accepted and dropped off at either of the two Mike Terry Auto Family locations. What’s even more is that the dealership has committed to matching every single donation.
“The community comes and spends their money with us and we like putting that money back into the community,” said Mike Terry, owner. “(The project) is going well and everyone is talking about it.”
The bus will continue to sit at the dealership until Aug. 17.
The Above-N-Beyond contest is another project occurring simultaneously with “Stuff the Bus.” Until Monday, the dealership will be taking nominations for outstanding teachers from Stephens County and the surrounding area. Students or parents can go to either dealership location to fill out the form. To nominate, provide the teacher’s name, school and grade/class, along with a description of why they are so deserving of recognition. The public can vote through this week.
In order to vote, you must physically visit the dealership to fill out a voting ballot. On Saturday, the top two winning teachers will each receive a $500 gift card to be used on school supplies and items needed for their classrooms.
“We’ve gotten good and positive responses about the contest,” said Julie. “I’m looking forward to awarding the teachers.”
