Homeowner shoots intruder who fled Indiana mental ward

KOKOMO, Ind. — A woman dressed in a hospital gown was shot after allegedly trying to break into a home near a mental ward from which she had just escaped, authorities in Indiana said Wednesday.

Police in Kokomo said officers were called to a home after receiving a report of burglary involving a gun at a residence just north of Community Howard Regional Health. The woman, Felecia Lewis, 31, allegedly broke into the residence and was shot by the homeowner.

She had been placed in the hospital by a court order due to behavioral issues while serving time at the Howard County jail, Sheriff Steve Rodgers said.

Lewis’ condition was unknown as of Wednesday afternoon. The homeowner has not been charged with any crime.

Information for this story was reported by the Kokomo (Ind.) Tribune.
