  • Bench asks for new lawyer, trial set in his murder case

    A judge entered a not guilty plea for Miles Sterling Bench on Thursday and tentatively set his murder trial for January, despite Bench’s complaints that he is not satisfied with his public defense attorneys.
    Bench, 22, interrupted Stephens County District Court Judge Joe Enos several times during a brief arraignment on a first-degree murder charge in the June 6, 2012 death of 16-year-old Braylee Rae Henry of Velma.

    The teenagers charged in the drive-by shooting death of an Australian man in Duncan were portraying themselves as gang bangers and likely trying to prove themselves as such, Duncan Police Chief Danny Ford said Thursday.
    But Ford and Stephens County District Attorney Jason Hicks said they have no evidence the teens — ages 15, 16 and 17 — actually belonged to a known gang, and Hicks said to his knowledge there is no gang activity in Stephens County.

  • DA Hicks releases 911 recording in the case of Chris Lane's murder

    Stephens County District Attorney Jason Hicks released on Tuesday, the 911 recording of the emergency call for help made by Joyce Smith of Duncan.
    Smith was driving by and saw Christopher Lane stagger across the road before collapsing. Other individuals joined her to assist.
    The call is 7 minutes and 17 seconds long.
    Discretion is advised because of the content. There is no profanity, but the call does provide a chilling account of Lane’s final moments.
    The 911 call came in at 2:57 p.m. Lane, 22, of Melbourne, Australia, was pronounced dead at Duncan Regional Hospital at 3:47 p.m.

  • Duncan doctor held in shooting

    Prosecutors charged a Duncan physician today for allegedly shooting a man police believe is the boyfriend of the doctor’s ex-wife. The victim’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
    Oscar Morales Jr., 54, was charged with a felony count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, which can carry a sentence of up to life in prison. Morales was expected to be arraigned later today.
