DUNCAN — The young man who was fatally shot today in Duncan, has been identified as an Australian national, Christopher Lane, 23.

Duncan Police Chief Danny Ford released the victim’s identity and more details this evening at 8:28 p.m.

Lane was shot just before 3 p.m. today, Aug. 16, 2013, near the intersection of Twilight Beach on Country Club Road.

“His dad has been notified and the Consulate’s been notified,” Ford said.

Ford said from what information he has been provided, Lane was here in Oklahoma to attend school and play sports. Other sources said Lane had only been back in Oklahoma three days.

His girlfriend and her family were immediately notified within two hours of the shooting.

Ford said that officers were quickly at the scene after the shooting had been reported and now authorities are trying to figure out why it took place.

“We’ve got people who heard shots and saw a car and heard a car squeal its tires and drive away.”

He also indicated that the path the alleged shooter took in fleeing the scene indicated it must have been someone familiar with the area.

Ford hesitated to say if the shooting was random since they are still investigating. “We have no way of knowing at this time.”

Based on earlier reports, the dispatch call came in at 2:57 p.m. A two block stretch of Country Club Road just south of the Twilight Beach turnoff has been blocked off with police tape and barricades.
