DUNCAN — Lawrence and Sharon Herndon celebrated 40 years of marriage Saturday.

On Aug. 14, 1970, a young engineer in Pampa, Texas, escorted Sharon Srygley Baulch and here 6-year-old daughter, Kelly Christine, to Gray County Court House, where Nat Lunsford, justice of the peace, officiated at their marriage.

Witnesses of the event were sister and brother-in-law of the bride, Rue and John Park. Standing with her mother, Kelly, was her only attendant. A short trip and honeymoon to Amarillo, Texas, followed.

Lawrence was born and raised in Duncan. He came back to Duncan in 1976, to follow in his father’s footsteps as an engineer at Halliburton. Sharon, born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas, has adopted Duncan as her own.

The couple’s favorite vacation spots are South Fork, Colo., where Lawrence has enjoyed hunting with family and friends; Colorado Springs, Colo., where the couple spent their 30th anniversary at Cheyenne Cañon Inn; and Michigan in the fall,  watching their grandsons play football.

The couple are active members of First Christian Church of Duncan.

The couple has three children: Kelly and husband, Jim Fultz, of Linden, Mich.; Josh Herndon of Duncan; and Ashley and husband, Charles Ozan, of Oklahoma City.

They have five grandchildren: Payden and Sawyer Fultz, Amelia and Charlotte Ozan, and Jamison Speer Herndon.
